吉利德公司非常遗憾地得知马丁博士的去世，他的科学远见和领导才能帮助改变了数百万患者的生活，使吉利德成长为今天的公司。John于1990年在吉利德科学担任研发副总裁，开始了他的职业生涯。在1996年至2016年担任首席执行官期间，他带领公司创造了惊人的增长。
吉利德科学董事长兼首席执行官丹尼尔·奥戴（Daniel O’Day）代表所有吉利德人向约翰的家人表示最深切的慰问。他表示：“John’s legacy will be felt for generations to come, living on through the scientific progress made under his leadership and the programs he championed that expanded access to medications for people around the world”
